// The Unescapable Reality//
In a little over one month, the show of shows will happen at the San Jose Improv. Right now as I type this, my mind is thinking of sketch concepts to shoot. However, the question lies if the audience will appreciate them. The answer should always be yes, but the reality is no. All we can hope is that most of them laugh, but don’t worry. The ideas we are coming up with are extremely hilarious and completely off the wall. That’s the thing with comedy, it’s very subjective. As a comedian we always hear suggestions from people that watch your show saying things like, “Talk about waiting in line in airports, rush hour traffic, or not getting your order right at Quiznos.” Blah, blah, blah general things that delve the creative mind into the mundane. No offense, I take those comments and I throw them in an imaginary trash can. Let me tell you, the can is almost full of all the comments I’ve heard from people that want such boring relatable comedy. Now, you can do material on such things as airplane food, the dmv, and smoking weed. The objective is to add your own spin on the subject to make it entirely your own. Thus the comedic voice. However, to be honest I want to steer away as far from that material as possible. I still consider myself a new comic and I try to fully explore the process of finding my voice, but I refuse to do it under people’s suggestions of what they think comedy is. It’s the inherent rebel in me that wants to be as far away from that as possible. In reality, as long as there is truth to the joke or sketch, people will respond no matter how obscure the material may be. Yet here we are discussing what will ultimately become the reality of the situation. That some material works with some people some material doesn’t. But I swear to the people reading this that the jokes are going to be awesome. It doesn’t matter the process of how we got there. The only thing that matters is the result. Believe me, we will deliver results. See you September 21st at the San Jose Improv!
